The Perfect Storm

The Chargers were the perfect storm this year. What a great ending to a perfect season. I don't think that another team has ever finished so far ahead of the other teams at the district tournament. It is a testament to the boys and the coaches. My hat goes off to all of them! Although it will be nice to breathe again, it is bitter sweet to see it end. I hope that you have all enjoyed the season as I have. Several of you have thanked me for posting the videos on the internet. Knowing that you have made use of them is thanks enough. It really has been a lot of fun to watch and then review all of the matches. For those who are interested, I do have all of the finals from District recorded and will make them available in a short time. I also want to thank my father-in-law-ex-wrestling-coach for all of the photos that he took at South End and District (over 700). I will make them available to everyone, I'm just trying to figure out the best way to get them to you since you can imagine how much disk space and band width it would take. Once I figure out what I'm going to do, I'll post it here for you. In return, I have one request. We left South End early to take Austin to a Dr.'s appointment and missed the medal's ceremony. Our daughter Anndi told us that Coach Smoot had her get up on the stand to receive the medal. If anyone has a photo of that, we'd really like to get a copy. Please let me know if and how we can get it. Thanks again to all of you. It's been great to get to know both the boys and parents a little better. And thanks to my wife for putting up with me stuck to my computer monitor long into the nights.

Undefeated!!

Now that was a dual!! Never have I seen a team lose a point because one of their wrestlers yelled at a ref. Never have I seen multiple parents escorted out of the stands by the Sheriff because of poor sportsmanship. I was glad the Sheriff was there but I was saddened that the Sheriff needed to be there. It put a damper on the energy of the dual. However, despite the downer that the poor sportsmanship was, I was totally impressed with our coaching staff and our wrestlers. You guys were so pumped, your energy was contagious. I loved every minute of the dual and felt like I had been working out for an hour. I was sweating and my heart was racing, all of the elements of a great meet. Congratulations on a perfect season. It was a great way to end and get us ready for next week of South End and District. We have got to stay strong and not get over confident. I think that both our Varsity and JV have a very good chance of making it to district and putting us ahead of the competition. Keep it up guys. We're behind you 100%. Make sure you get your rest, we need to be at the top of our games on Tuesday.

Congratulations to those who won by fall. I was not noting the scores and my assistant (who will remain unnamed because he's a terrible barber - just ask Nate H.) I think was a bit distracted so I have to try and decipher what he gave me. But as far as I can tell the list includes: Devin P., Austin J., Tanner H. & Doug S. If I missed someone, please let me know. It is completely unintentional. I look forward to next week and the energy of the tournaments.

Now in an attempt to be a little more secure with videos of our boys, the files from now on will be password protected. The password to all of these files is the first name of the person who has stepped in to assist Coach Smoot with the Varsity matches and my last name. It is a single word all lower case. This may cause some people a little pain and I'm sorry for that. It is just a result of the world we live in. If you have problems with the password, feel free to contact me directly.

Door Closed on Bountiful

Wow! Final score 77-0. Excellent job guys! I totally didn't expect a shutout today. Everyone looked so good today. If we bring that same skill and energy to District, there isn't anyone that will be able to touch us. OK, that may be premature since we still have West Point on Thursday and they are the only other undefeated team in the district. I look forward to Thursday. It should be a great match and a preview of district.

A special congratulations to Ty H. who joined the varsity line up today because Ben B. was sick. Ty was wrestling with a separated shoulder but you'd never have guessed it based on his performance. He took his guy down to the mat and finished him off in the first period. Nice job Ty. Ben, we hope you get better soon. That goes for all of the Chargers who are not feeling well. Get some chicken soup and some extra rest (or whatever your mother says is best). We need everyone ready for south end and district.

South Davis Shut-Out

Final score: 82-0. What a contrast from Kaysville! Almost everyone won by fall so I won't go down the list of people. However, I will say Kudos to Breckin G. (sorry if I spelled your name wrong) and Isaac E. who were new to the Varsity line up this week and both won by fall. It was also good to have Colton H. in there substituting for Britton G. who is out with Pneumonia. We hope you getting feeling better soon. Well, two more to go and then it's on to south end and district. I can't wait. However, we still have West Point next week. I checked the district scores for last year and the year before. Both years West Point came in third so they certainly have the possibility of being a strong team again this year. Should be fun. See you there.

Knights No Longer

50 - 19: The saga continues. The score looks great, however, I don't think that it accurately reflects the battle. Some may think I have been pretty cocky in the previous posts. I'll admit it. This was a good dose of competition and it was good for me and probably good for the team as well. It's important to not get lazy and over confident. The Knights were just what we needed, a little bit of reality. The Knights fought hard and did a respectable job. They were by far the toughest competition we've had to date. I really enjoyed the dual and enjoyed seeing/meeting some of you that I have not met before. There was a strong Charger turnout. It was awesome to be part of it. Because of the excitement, I need to apologize for the quality of some of the filming. I found that I got caught up in the energy of the match and didn't always keep our wrestlers in the frame. Also, the ref had a strange ability of parking himself right in front of the camera. So, sorry for the problems this go 'round. I need to find an auto button for these types of duals.

Congratulations to all of the guys who won their matches by a fall. They included Austin J., Matt W., Cameron N., Matt T., *Britton & Tanner P. Congrats also to Devin P. who scored a Tech Fall.

*Note - I forgot Britton's pin in the original post. Thanks to Carrie for bringing that to my attention. Sorry Britton.

A Thought From Another Parent

It was a year ago that our winning streak came to screeching halt at the hands of a very impressive Kaysville Junior High team. And while we certainly tipped our hats to our rival, it’s time to take back what is ours and Tuesday’s match is a big step in that direction.

Parent, friends, and anyone else who has even a passing interest in Centerville Junior High wrestling, be sure to make the short trip north to Kaysville Junior for the match tomorrow, March 17 at 3:15.

Kaysville Junior is located across the street on the west side of Davis High School.

Let’s go and make some noise and support our team!

Another Day...Another Dual...Another Domination

I'm not a wrestler, although a converted fan. So, my son doesn't get any of his wrestling genes from me. However, my father-in-law was a high school wrestling coach in Santa Barbara. Oddly enough his school's mascot was "The Chargers" and their colors were also blue and gold. So, I get a lot of Charger paraphernalia from him that I wear to our matches. One of the shirts I received has a silk screen of what appears to be the grim reaper on a horse with a scythe in his hands. Across the top it says "No friends..." and then under the mounted grim reaper it says "Fewer and fewer enemies". That is kind of how this season is shaping up. Granted, we still have a few matches that could prove...interesting. However, I am so confident in our coaching staff and the wrestlers themselves that I believe that they will take this all the way.

I want to thank my wife for filming in my absence yesterday. It was very hard to sit and work while I knew the team was on the mat again. However, I have been able to review all of the matches and enjoyed what I saw. Certainly not like being there but better than nothing. I don't have the score but from what I did see it must have been close to 82 - 6. Great job guys! Almost everyone won by a fall. I look forward to next week to see who can get the fastest fall at Kaysville. I've been waiting for this one all year. I'm expecting the dual to last all of 20 minutes.

Farmington Got Plowed

OK, I know you're probably tired of the goofy titles of my posts, but considering the fact that I'm an engineer I think I'm doing pretty well. Don't worry though, I don't plan on trading in my pocket protector for a pen and notepad anytime soon.

Unfortunately I cannot find the stats from the Farmington dual but the final score was about 54 to 18. I'm sure about the 18 but not our score. It's a lot easier to add up our competitions (if you can call them that) score than our own. So I'll just say kudos to those who won by fall. You know who you are. I don't want to try and remember because I'm sure I'll forget someone and then be in the dog house. I will say this, Farmington has been our biggest competition yet. They didn't score any more points on us than any other team but they kept us from the recent pin fests that we've had. District is looking better and better with every dual. Keep it up Chargers!

Here are the links and probably the only reason that you come to this site. Certainly not to hear an engineer try to impersonate a writer. Enjoy!

Mueller Park Gets Schooled

Final score: 84 to 6! Today's dual almost made me feel bad for Mueller Park...almost. It was nice of the coaches to allow some of the JV guys to step up and wrestle varsity. Given the score, you'd never know. That just goes to show how strong of a program CJH has. Big kudos to those on the JV squad that were able to come in and hand it to their opponent including Alex G. in the first period and Colton H. in the second period. Congrats also to Matt T. who went up a weight to 125 to take on probably Mueller Parks best wrester and pinned him in the second period. It was too bad that Mueller Parks team was so lean because several other JV guys could have had matches including Austin J., Breckin G. & Tanner P. Maybe next time. Next Tuesday is Farmington at Farmington. It should be a good match. I look forward to seeing you all there.

Hopefully the new site is working well for you. Since I haven't had any negative comments I'll go with the "No news is good news" idea. Here are the links to today's matches (I did get them all today).

A Moment of Silence at (for) Sunset

There was a little (probably very little) concern by the guys this week regarding our dual with Sunset. However, there was a little bit of conjecture over how good Sunset may or may not be. The only thing we knew is that they beat Kaysville, last years district champions. I guess the concern was understandable but in the end unnecessary. It wasn't a complete stomping like the last two duals but not far from it. Congratulations to Tanner H., Britton G., Tanner P., Devin P., Ben B., Connor D., Matt W., Cameron N. & Matt T. who all won their matches by falls. I have to apologize to Connor for some operator error during his match. When I turned off the camera at the end of his match, it started recording which meant that I completely missed the match. Doh! I'll try and be a little more observant next time.

It was brought to my attention that Badongo, the file hosting site where I have been placing the matches, has been displaying inappropriate adds. In an attempt to keep the site safe for everyone, I have moved to a new site. This one is completely free from the annoying adds (safe or not). The down side, if you think it is negative, is that the files will no longer play embedded in the web site on their own when you click on the link. Instead, it will download the files directly to your computer. Most of the time Windows should automatically launch the correct viewer (normally Windows Media Player) when the download is complete. If you have any problems with the new site, please let me know.

Farewell Fairfield

That's right, Fairfield got steamrolled today. It was a pin fest and a throw fest. Matches won by pin included Devin P., Austin J., Connor D.,
Jaedon F., Matt W., Matt T., Tanner H., Colby M. & Doug S. Lawson E also had a techfall and that only because he miscalculated how far ahead he was! I think that the coaches must have been going over throws last week because the other team got a lot of air time today. Although there were a lot of calls, most of them looked really good to me. But hey, what do I know, I'm just a "fan"atic. Well, it was a lot of fun to watch. Definitely the cheapest/best entertainment in town. As a reminder, there is no match on Thursday. Our next one is on March 3rd against Sunset at Sunset. See you there.

It has come to my attention that some (maybe many) of you had problems download/viewing the files that I put up from the N. Layton match. This time I have uploaded the files as wmv files as opposed to mpg files in hopes that these will play nicer with the embedded Window's Media Player that seems to be used on the badango file sharing site. I would really appreciate it if you could let me know how these work for you. If you have a Google account, you can reply directly to this post. If you don't have a Google account, you can create one easily. If you don't want to create an account, you can e-mail me by clicking on the link to the right at the bottom of the green rectangle where it says "View my complete profile". That will take you to a new page and on the left it says Contact with a link that says Email. If you click on the Email link, it will allow you to e-mail me directly with any comments that you may have. I want to make sure that it is working well for everyone. There is no sense putting them on the net if you can't see them :).

This year I will be tracking the team stats as well. Following is a link to the Excel file that I will be using. I will update it after every match as well.

Chargers Are Back in the House

As I was getting ready to leave for the meet today, I revived a ritual that I began last year. First, find the camcorder, next the bag, then the power cord and extension cord. Don't forget the piece of paper to write everything down on. I thought to myself, "Here we go again. Another season of wrestling has begun." It was like putting on your favorite old winter coat. Brings back a lot of good memories and just feels good. Then the nerves started to kick in. What if he doesn't make weight? What if he loses? What if he gets hurt or hurts the other guy? What if.... You know the scenario. Well, just like last year the Chargers came out ready to fight and fight they did. The first four matches ended in pins. Chargers 24, Longhorns 0. Then we lost our first. That was followed by another four wins with 3 pins. Now it's Chargers 45, Longhorns 6. We lost our second after that run, but it was followed by another three wins, two pins and a tech fall. The last two matches were split, one for CJH and one for NLJH. However, if you ask me, Connor D. should have been given the match. I think the ref harbors a little animosity toward CJH. That's OK, it was a good match. Jaedon F. finished it off with a strong pin in the 2nd period. Final score Chargers 68, Longhorns 15. Well that good feeling is back and it looks like it will continue for another six weeks. Let's enjoy all of it. Way to go guys! Way to go coaches!

Now for the important part. Here are the links to the matches. In order to keep the size of the files manageable, I had to shrink the image. I have the full resolution files on my disk if anyone would like them. Just let me know and we can work something out.
