Not a Walk in the Central Davis Park

I've fallen back into the comfort zone. The Chargers have done so well over the past few weeks that I come in expecting a win. They got it again against Central Davis but the score this time, 42 to 37 if I remember correctly, was a lot closer than I expected. There were a lot of close matches and some did not go our way. The first half we dominated however Central came back to close the match to a very respectable score. Good for them. I like a team that keeps on fighting even when it may appear hopeless. Congrats to those on the JV squad who joined the varsity line up this time, Jaedon F., Austin J. & ??? Next week is Syracuse and South End. Get a lot of good sleep, practice hard and come on guys, no junk food. You have to be ready for South End and then district. If you are going to beat Kaysville, you are going to have to be at your best. See you on Tuesday.

Farmington...Competition No Longer

I remember the District tournament last year. It was really a glorified dual between Farmington and Centerville. We took turns in the number 1 spot the whole evening. It all came down to the final three matches. At that point it was Mitch R., Josh M., and Danar K. (sorry if I slaughtered the names). Coach Smoot said, "I don't want to put any pressure on you but in order to win, you have to pin your guys." OK, no pressure. Well, they did it! It seemed that Farmington had been our closest competition and they were close. After yesterday's dual, I would have to say that this year is definitely different. We have to keep our sites on Kaysville. They are the team to beat this year. With the help of the JV, I think we can do it. Congratulations to Colton B. who keeps his undefeated record alive and to Tanner H., Britton G. and Landon L. who all won by fall. Below are the links to the latest files. Good job guys!
P.S. I was told that Korbin S. is still undefeated as well. Sorry Korbin.

Mrs. Layton brought to my attention that the link to the video for the 175-275 weight group was wrong. She was right and I have updated the link below. It should now be correct. Thanks Mrs. Layton for finding that for me. Some times everything on my computer screen begins to blend into a big blob :)

Happy Easter

It's been a while since my last post and upload of the duals. I have to apologize because we had some technical difficulties at the Bountiful dual. I was only able to film about a third of the matches before my camcorder died. I hope to be able to get the matches off the old camcorder and upload them. However, I do have a different camcorder no and was able to get all of the Millcreek dual. The guys did great! Another dual, another team defeated. I believe the final score was 55 - 22 but I'm not sure since there were a couple of matches that I didn't see the final score so I am guessing on the team points. If anyone wants to correct me, feel free. :)

Congratulations to Colton Brown who is still undefeated in his matches. If I'm not mistaken, he is the only varsity wrestler to be undefeated still. I wish you all a happy Easter and look forward to our next dual! See you on Tuesday.

A Walk in the Mueller Park

To be honest, I didn't expect much from the Dual at Mueller Park. My son came home from practice on Wednesday and said, "Coach has to catch an airplane after the match so he told us we had to be quick and pin our guys". Whether or not that is an 8th graders interpretation of what was said or not may never be known, but that is a whole different topic for a different blog. Before I arrived I got a call from my son telling me that he didn't have a match. If I wasn't filming all of the duals for the boys (OK, and parents and grand parents) I probably would have stayed home. Little did I know that Austin was only one of five forfeits from Mueller Park. The dual was pretty slow right up until the last match. Jordan O. showed his stamina by going into four over-times. There was even a moment during one of the over time periods where he had to take a break and go have a conversation with the garbage can. That didn't stop him though. He went straight back to the mat and continued the grueling job of beating his opponent. In the fourth round of over-time, Jordan exploded off the bottom getting his 1 point escape and then took his opponent down to finish the match. It was definitely one of the most exciting matches CJH has seen this season. If you have the time and the bandwidth, you can download the entire match from the last link in this post. Congratulations to Jordan on his awesome marathon of a match!

Whaaaam

71 - 9! Need I say more? Probably not but I will. What ever the coaches said and did the days after the stomping we got from Kaysville must have worked because our guys came out and served it up to South Davis even worse than they were served by Kaysville. As the dual was about to start I was informed that the day before, coach "Rip", coach for the state champion Vikings, came over with some of his wrestlers and went through the cradle series with the Chargers. It was totally obvious as the meet progressed. Boom! Bam! What-a-slam! It wasn't until the 13th match that South Davis even got on the board. Congratulations to all the guys who have worked so hard for this win.

Sorry for the delay in getting the movies up on the web...real life got in the way.

Pavlov's Experiment

Today I was living proof of Pavlov's famous experiment in Classical Conditioning. However, this time the subject was me and not a bunch of dogs, although I'm sure that I was not alone in my reaction as I scanned the bleachers at the end of today's dual meet against Kaysville.

Last year I came to the dual meets, the whistle blew, the buzzer sounded and at the end of the meet CJH was always the winner. I just came to expect it. This year has been the same. Although I knew our varsity line up was young and that many of our power houses from last year had moved on to better things, like the State Champion Vikings, we won our first two dual meets pretty well. I figured the names had changed but the results would always be the same. Enter the Kaysville Knights. We started off strong with Colton B. pinning his opponent. Great start! 6-0. It was four more matches before we won another - nice pin Jordan O. From there it was another grueling six matches until Austin J. pinned his opponent. I thought for sure we would win the rest and again come out on top. Nope. It wasn't until the last match when Korbin S. finished the dual with another pin. Final score CJH 24 / Kaysville 63. Where was the win? I was waiting, like Pavlov's dogs for the food which never came. As they say, all good things come to an end. So it was today with the CJH winning streak.

So, where's the silver lining? Ultimately in our coaches and our team. Coach Smoot gathered the team around after cleaning up the gym. I'm sure some were ready for a gentle tongue lashing. It never happened. What did he say? He told the boys the truth. He told them that they weren't as well conditioned as the Kaysville team. He told them they needed to work harder at practice. He told them they needed to learn their moves so well that it was second nature and they could execute them on anyone regardless how good their opponent was. Then he told them that in four weeks they would be in better condition than Kaysville. He told them that South End and District would be the hardest matches they would have this year. But, he told them they could do it. And I believe him right along with his boys. So get in there, listen to your coaches, do what they say and we will be right there with you cheering you on to victory at South End and District.

One thing I forgot to mention is that the JV team dominated the match. That means we'll have a better chance at South End and District.

Go Chargers!!
