Pavlov's Experiment

Today I was living proof of Pavlov's famous experiment in Classical Conditioning. However, this time the subject was me and not a bunch of dogs, although I'm sure that I was not alone in my reaction as I scanned the bleachers at the end of today's dual meet against Kaysville.

Last year I came to the dual meets, the whistle blew, the buzzer sounded and at the end of the meet CJH was always the winner. I just came to expect it. This year has been the same. Although I knew our varsity line up was young and that many of our power houses from last year had moved on to better things, like the State Champion Vikings, we won our first two dual meets pretty well. I figured the names had changed but the results would always be the same. Enter the Kaysville Knights. We started off strong with Colton B. pinning his opponent. Great start! 6-0. It was four more matches before we won another - nice pin Jordan O. From there it was another grueling six matches until Austin J. pinned his opponent. I thought for sure we would win the rest and again come out on top. Nope. It wasn't until the last match when Korbin S. finished the dual with another pin. Final score CJH 24 / Kaysville 63. Where was the win? I was waiting, like Pavlov's dogs for the food which never came. As they say, all good things come to an end. So it was today with the CJH winning streak.

So, where's the silver lining? Ultimately in our coaches and our team. Coach Smoot gathered the team around after cleaning up the gym. I'm sure some were ready for a gentle tongue lashing. It never happened. What did he say? He told the boys the truth. He told them that they weren't as well conditioned as the Kaysville team. He told them they needed to work harder at practice. He told them they needed to learn their moves so well that it was second nature and they could execute them on anyone regardless how good their opponent was. Then he told them that in four weeks they would be in better condition than Kaysville. He told them that South End and District would be the hardest matches they would have this year. But, he told them they could do it. And I believe him right along with his boys. So get in there, listen to your coaches, do what they say and we will be right there with you cheering you on to victory at South End and District.

One thing I forgot to mention is that the JV team dominated the match. That means we'll have a better chance at South End and District.

Go Chargers!!
